The walls were covered in crucifixes. Rosaries hung from every nail. Jack had arranged them obsessively, compulsively — not in worship but in taxonomy, the way a collector arranges specimens. The chair in the center of the room had a drain beneath it. The camera on the tripod had been running for six hours.
He told her: "You were born from perfection. Mother was the mistake."
